An exotic adventure, a classic story of the struggle between good and evil, a fairy tale. Presented by wooden actors. An exotic adventure, a classic story of the struggle between good and evil, a fairy tale. Presented by wooden actors. A story from the realm of imagination, populated by princes and princesses, dragons and exotic birds. A play about jealousy, vanity and compassion, and of course the overriding power of love.

Die Zauberflöte
A Dutch translation of Mozart's most famous opera. Mozart did not write The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) for a big opera theatre as we are now accustomed to, but for a small theatre in a suburb of Vienna. Mozart and his writer Schikaneder were fascinated by the genre 'magic opera', in which magical theatrical effects and elements of puppetry melted together. They wrote their new opera in German, instead of the aristocratic Italian which was customary in that period. That way everyone could empathize with the grief of Princess Pamina and laugh about the jokes and antics of the bird catcher Papageno.

The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre
The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre (Amsterdams Marionetten Theater) produced their own Dutch adaptation of the opera, that matches the intimacy that Mozart had in mind. The piece was recorded with a small ensemble, playing instruments from Mozart's time. Of course, the transverse flute, a wooden Magic Flute, takes the lead. A story from the realm of imagination that fits the enchanting puppets like a glove.
