The largest city archive in the world is located in a monumental former bank in Amsterdam. It has over 40 kilometers of history and also contains hundreds of thousands of books, drawings, etches, pictures, films and audiotapes.
A vault filled with treasure
Behind the impressive vault doors that date back to the time when the building was the largest bank in the Netherlands lies a treasure trove filled with the history of Amsterdam. Next to the Treasury is the open repository, which provides a fascinating insight into the way in which the 40 kilometres of Amsterdam archives are conserved.
The Treasures of Amsterdam
The most beautiful and most interesting items from our archives are displayed on two stories with richly decorated floors and ceilings. These "Treasures of Amsterdam" have been arranged in twelve themes, each of which is represented by a prominent citizen of Amsterdam. As Freddy Heineken represents the mercantile spirit of the people of Amsterdam, Theo van Gogh represents freedom of speech.
